PS3 Mulls Online Video, Adds DTS-HD
 April 28, 2008 — Sony is in negotiation with the studios to activate the long-promised online video feature in the PlayStation3, according to the Los Angeles Times. This would follow two previous attempts at online video distribution via Movielink and Sony Connect.
Sony has some catching up to do. PS3 has shipped nine million units worldwide, whereas Microsoft's Xbox Live already has 10 million subscribers. In other news, take PS3 video games. Add lossless surround. Could anything be more terrifying? Sony has decided to add DTS-HD Master audio capability. It won't require new hardware—just a firmware upgrade, available subce April 15, 2008. You'll also need games with DTS-HD MA soundtracks, of course. The press release notes that more than 100 DTS-HD Master Audio movies and concert videos are now available. The more, the merrier. Scott on our sister site UltimateAV notes that PS3 will not pass the DTS-HD bitstream. Instead it will convert the bitstream to PCM and output it that way.
